and that includes the chief of police chris moore who will be stepping down in january. not only are they having trouble to hang on to the officers they have, it's having a problem attracting new ones. san jose police recruits are told, don't walk, run to classes while at the academy. but it's the department itself that can't move fast enough to replace all the officers walking away from the s j.p. d. >> we're losing officers at a fashioner rate than we can replace them. >> reporter: the academy supervisor says it's the first time he has seen that trend in 20 years at the sjpd. he says it won't change the quality or speed of training which is nine months from beginning to end. this academy of 44 officers has six more months of training ahead. >> the fact that they are needed desperately doesn't change the fact that they have to be competent when they leave here. we're not reducing or ramping up the time that it takes to train them because of the needs in th police department. that would be te

bizarre murder for hire talk targeting pop star justin bieber. sounds moore like a made for tv movie. 41-year-old mark state was arrested last month along with his nephew. sources tell kqre that the men planned to strangle bieber and his body guard with a paisley tie at the show in new york last month and the suspects were allegedly going to castrate them both. one of the men was arrested with pruning shears. authorities say the plan was hatched by a convicted murderer already in prison. he tipped off the authorities himself. >>> people in indiana love basketball but many of them hate the score from a girl's high school basketball game this week. the team from arlington high played bloomington. they won 107-2. let me say that again. 107-2. the bloomington coach is being accused of running up the score. he says he encouraged his team to keep shooting because if he didn't, it would have been more embarrassing to arlington. arlington had already lost 23 straight games averaging just 17 points a game. >> not nice. not in fort wane kentucky. here's a basket brawl for you featuring two mas

. these are books i started collecting when i was 8. patrick moore, it is funny that you haven't heard from him because not only did he write more than out boxen astronomy, but he was also the longest running host of any television program in the milky way galaxy. he hosted the bbc sky at night beginning in 1957 and worked all the way up until last monday. he hosted the last program. over this weekend heeded -- he died at 89. he was known to millions. he inspired millions in astronomy, inspired me, and you're about find out why when you look at some clips of an interview i did with patrick moore for pbs a few years ago. watch. >> i can remember the exact moment. i was 6 years old, and that was 60 years ago. i was sitting in the armchair in england. i picked up a book belonging to my mother who was always just a bit interested in astronomy. i thought this is interesting. 60 years later i am still trying to figure it out. >> venus, i don't recommend. it has a surface temperature of nearly 1,0 00 degrees. the atmosphere is mainly carbon monoxide. it is about 90,000 the pressure of this ro

. near east moore avenue northbound industry state 280 was closed for two hours. and it was not just the rain. the high winds caused problems on all bay area bridges. this big rig flipped over this morning. it took the crews 6 hours to get it out of there. the chp says the driver ignored the high wind warning signs and was driving too fast. they had to wait until the winds died down to right the rig and move it out. and on city streets cars were fish tailing on flooded roadways. the rain came down so quickly storm drains were no match for the water. >> it was pretty hairy. >> reporter: the bright side, it was not a weekday morning commute and rain finally cheered late morning to give drivers a reprieve. >> it was not just the roads, bart had their share of problems today. they had to tread in ankle water to get to kiosks this morning. a power failure stopped all trains for an hour. tonight, though, service is back to normal. >>> at the height of the storm, 21,000 homes lost power. this was one of the reasons. power poles snapped by wind and trees. this one in san francisco district left
